Glaucoma Know How !

Choose the best place for glaucoma treatment , if untreated, it may cause a permanent vision loss !

Glaucoma also known as “Kala Motia” or “Kach Bindu “ is one of the leading cause of blindness in the world, especially in older people. Glaucoma is one form of eye disease that causes loss of sight by harming a part of the eye called the optic nerve. The nerve is important as it helps in sending information from your eyes to your brain.

When the optic nerve is damaged by glaucoma we begin to lose some patches of vision usually the side vision (peripheral vision). After some time, glaucoma may likewise tend to damage our central vision. You may not notice a loss of side vision until you have lost a great deal of your sight.

Glaucoma is often referred to as a Silent thief of vision because people are not aware of the signs of the disease until a part of the vision is already lost and the lost eye sight cannot be restored. Early diagnosis and accurate treatment is the only way to avoid optic nerve damage and eye sight loss from glaucoma.

What are the symptoms of glaucoma?

Usually, glaucoma patients do not have any complaints about the vision and they are detected on routine eye examination. In most cases of glaucoma, the patient doesn’t know about the gradual loss of sight until the point that vision is significantly impaired. In any case, if glaucoma progresses without sufficient treatment, the following symptoms might occur in some individuals:

  • Pain around the eyes when coming out from darkness (e.g., as soon as the person comes out of a cinema hall)
  • Colored halo rings seen around light bulbs especially in the mornings and nights
  • Frequent change of reading glasses, headaches, pain, and redness of the eyes
  • Reduced vision in dim illumination and during nights
  • Gradual decrease of side vision with the progression of glaucoma

Who is at a risk of glaucoma?

Anyone can develop glaucoma. Some people are at higher risk than others. But certain risk factors for the disease are:

  • High Intraocular pressure
  • Age- risk increases with age, especially those over the age of 40 yrs.
  • People with a family history of glaucoma.
  • People with nearsightedness (Myopia) for open-angle type and farsightedness (hyperopia) for close angle type
  • People with Hypertension
  • People with Migraines
  • Diabetics

How glaucoma is diagnosed?

Periodical eye check-ups are the best way to detect Glaucoma easily. Most of the time while checking glaucoma, eye doctors tend to look for damage to the optic nerve and any loss of side vision. Glaucoma can be detected using five basic tests, they are:

  • Visual acuity test
  • Tonometry, to measure the eye pressure
  • Gonioscopy, to assess angles of an anterior chamber
  • Evaluation of optic disc damage
  • Perimetry test, for visual field examination

All the above tests are done at the time of diagnosis visit which would help the doctor treat you in the best possible way. Some of the above tests may require periodic repetition that has a particular scientific logic for further confirmation & treatment.

What are the treatments of glaucoma?

Glaucoma cannot be cured but it can be controlled so that further damage to the optic nerve can be slowed or halted. The treatment for Glaucoma is usually done by using medicines, laser surgery, glaucoma surgery or a combination of these treatments. Medicines (eye drops) are commonly the initial phase in treatment, yet laser surgery can be as effective as a first choice.

1. Treating Glaucoma with Medicines:

In this method, the ophthalmologist will prescribe eye drops to be instilled in the affected eye. The objective of the treatment is to decrease eye pressure using eye drops and medicines.

2. Treating Glaucoma with Laser Surgery

Some people may need eye surgery to control their glaucoma. As compared to glaucoma surgery, lasers can be an effective mean for treating glaucoma because they avoid cutting and have a lower chance of complications. There are three common laser procedures:

  • Laser trabeculoplasty
  • Peripheral iridotomy
  • Laser cyclophotocoagulation.

3. Treating Glaucoma with Glaucoma Surgery

Glaucoma surgery includes a procedure where an opening is made to create a new drainage pathway for the fluid to leave the eye easily.
