A few days ago, my friend, Dinesh, called to inform me that his father who stays in the village had undergone a routine eye check-up, and was diagnosed with Glaucoma. This was very surprising for both of them because, it was just a routine check-up without any prior complaint, so how did it happen? I asked Dinesh to bring him to my clinic, to undergo another eye checkup, for further examination. After conducting the examination, I discovered that he really had Glaucoma (open-angle glaucoma). 80% of the vision in one eye and 50% in the other eye was damaged. If the situation had stayed this way for even a few more months, he would have gone completely blind.
We call this disease Glaucoma –THE SILENT THIEF OF VISION.
Initially, only the peripheral vision gets affected, which then spreads to the central vision
How can we take care?
Prevention is always better than cure – everybody needs to get their eyes checked at least once a year. It is necessary to measure the eye’s intraocular pressure, examination of the retina and optic nerve, etc. If anything seems to be suspicious, you will be recommended to undergo tests such as perimetry, OCT scan, and more, depending on what is suspected. When it comes to the health of your eyes, it is vital to trace the problem right till the root, and then fix it.
Patients diagnosed with Glaucoma can be treated with medicines, laser treatment or surgery (if needed). Once diagnosed, it is necessary to measure intra-ocular pressure every month. Follow up examinations are dependent on the intensity of glaucoma and its impact on the optic nerve. Taking regular care and treatment can save your vision, and prevent any further damage. We regularly conduct a number of activities for awareness of Glaucoma, with free Glaucoma checkups, every Saturday, at our clinic.
